Thanksgiving in Mexico City
We spent a long Thanksgiving 2006 weekend in Mexico City. What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than by visiting an American culture which was merely made to undergo religious conversion instead of annihilation? We stayed in the heart of downtown a block or two away from the main square and cathedral.

Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan
The Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan was a huge temple complex in 1519 when Cortes came to Mexico City. It had been rebuilt six times (once every 52-year cycle of the Aztec calendar) and contained 78 buildings, with two tall pyramids. The Spanish were disgusted by it and insisted that it be destroyed. The Cathedral was built with many of its stones. It was mostly forgotten for the next few centuries — a few excavations in the 20th century uncovered a few things. In 1978, when building the Metro, workers uncovered an eight-ton rock slab covered with carvings. This led to it becoming a large archeological project. Now a large outdoor area shows the excavation and the ruins, and a very nice modern museum houses many artifacts. More pictures...
A Day At The Pyramids
We booked a tour to Teotihuacan, some pyramids close to the city. More pictures...
Palacio de Bellas Artes
Palacio de Bellas Artes is a magnificent Art Deco building downtown. It features a performance space, with a glass curtain made by Tiffany which is only shown on Sunday mornings. Unfortunately, when we went back on Sunday morning, a performance was in progress and we couldn't see it. But there were many impressive murals by several Mexican artists that we were able to walk around and see. More pictures...
