The Ténéré Desert

We left Temet and headed east toward Bilma and the eclipse path. On the way, we had lunch at the Blue Mountains, an outcropping of bluish marble. East of them were miles and miles of completely flat desert.

The mountains are blue. Sky blue. Well, they seem that way; measurements with the tools in Photoshop indicate that these rocks are perfectly gray, while the sky tends toward orange. As I mentioned, the lighting is odd in the Ténéré.

Even as the desert seemed endlessly flat and featureless, every part of it seemed to have a different pattern of ripples in the sand. There'd be little grasses in some places, rocks in others, gourds in others.

Some workers near Achegour, where there is a well at which we stopped to refill the water jugs. It might have been a place to stay but the area with the trees was completely trashed. We camped a few km south. That little truck is practical for this terrain. They seemed to be looking for oil. Last chance to see.

There were a couple of buttes where we had lunch. This butte had the most amazingly colorful rocks everywhere.

I'm happy this place isn't on any maps.

This rock is a volcanic "bomb".
